About Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv-Yafo, a major city on Israel's Mediterranean coast, is situated approximately 60 km northwest of Jerusalem. Founded in 1909 as a garden suburb of the ancient port of Jaffa, which it was later merged with in 1950, Tel Aviv has evolved into a significant economic and cultural hub by the early 21st century. Covering a city area of 52 square km and a metropolitan area of 1,518 square km, its population in 2008 was 402,600 for the city and 3,233,500 for the metropolitan area.

Tel Aviv's strategic location near the old city of Jaffa, historically a gateway to Jerusalem, contributed significantly to its early growth. It became the largest city in the region before the mid-20th century and remains the core of Israel's largest metropolitan area, representing a substantial portion of the national population. The city is recognized as Israel's economic engine, hosting government ministries, including the Ministry of Defense, and serving as the headquarters for most of the country's large corporations and foreign embassies.

It contrasts with Jerusalem's conservative and historical nature by being more secular, liberal, and focused on contemporary life. The city has undergone significant beautification and development, especially near its beaches, enhancing its appeal as a center of economic activity and cultural richness. Tel Aviv is also famed for its architectural heritage, particularly the White City area, renowned for its Bauhaus and International Style buildings, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003.

The city enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, humid summers and mild, rainy winters. Its coastal location moderates extreme temperatures, making the climate pleasant for much of the year. The Yarqon River to the north and the Ayalon Stream to the east are significant geographical features, with the latter occasionally causing floods in the past.

Tel Aviv, one of the major cities in Israel and located on the country’s Mediterranean coastline, is the center of culture, art, education and trade. Tel Aviv, considered to be an important place for all religions with its history dating back to 2000 BC, is also a tourism center with its nightlife and unique beaches. The White City, in UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and the museums spread over all parts of the city make Tel Aviv more attractive.

Tel Aviv is also known as 'the city that never sleeps' where the life is active for 24 hours. Since the country is a trade center and has a crowded population, traffic congestion is the biggest problem in the city. Those governing the city are trying to make transportation easier every day with the bicycle trails they are expanding.

Trains and buses offering service to approximately one million passengers monthly are the main transportation options of the city. In the city, two airports as international and regional offer service for passengers.

At International Ben Gurion Airport, many transportation vehicles offer service for passengers. Thanks to the trains you can go not only to the city center but also to many cities of the country.
