About Kansas City

The majority of the city is located within the borders of the U.S. state of Missouri, while a small portion of the city’s northern districts are situated in the U.S. state of Kansas. Therefore, the city of Kansas is in fact home to two states. It is also the largest city in the state of Missouri along with St. Louis. The city was founded at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers in 1838 and was initially named ‘Kansas Town’. It reached its current boundaries in 1853 and became a city. The name of the city means ‘people of the south wind’ in Sioux native language. It was ranked 9th among the ‘10 Most Comfortable Liveable Cities’ in the 2010 Forbes Magazine.

Kansas City, known for its barbecue and steak, is home to Kansas City Public Library, which has gained international fame for its architecture. An old education building in the city was transformed into what is now known as the Kansas City Public Library. The giant book spines cover the exterior walls of the library. The building that was put into service in 2004 is among the most extraordinary buildings in terms of design and architecture. The city is one of the cradles of jazz and blues in the United States. The American Jazz Museum is a centre of attraction for the foreign jazz and blues enthusiasts.

The annually organised ‘Kansas City Zombie Walk’ is very popular among citizens. Kansas City also has its own ‘Secret Santa Tradition’ since 1981. It was revealed that Larry Stewart, the first Secret Santa, donated approximately 1 million dollars to people in need when he died in 2007.  Kansas City Public Library, Kansas City Toys and Miniature Museum, American Jazz Museum, Nelson-Atkins Art Museum, and the Kansas City Statue of Liberty are among the city’s major attractions. The climate is mild in Kansas City. Kansas City International Airport is located 24 kilometres northwest of the city.
