About Hatay

On the shore of the Mediterranean, Hatay encompasses Turkey’s southernmost point, the Topraktutan Village. Bearing historical significance for various communities, the province has about 1,490,000 inhabitants.

Temperatures tend to be high in the summer. Generally speaking, Hatay’s summers are dry and sweltering hot, and its winters are rainy owing to the impact of the Mediterranean climate. Snow is a rare weather event in Hatay.

Often called the meeting point of civilizations, Hatay is home to the first Catholic church in history, the Church of St. Peter, and historical monuments such as the Titus Tunnel carved into rocks. Thanks to these historical buildings, visitors from a variety of religious backgrounds come to Hatay around the year. The recreational resort called Harbiye, and the Iskenderun Port are natural must-sees. Turkey's only remaining Armenian village, called Vakifli, is also located in Hatay.

One of the first things that come to mind when Hatay is mentioned is its rich cuisine. Specialties of the area include künefe (dessert of shredded phyllo, cheese and syrup), küflü çökelek (moldy cheese), sheet kebab, chicken roasted in salt, and oruk (bulgur balls stuffed with mincemeat).

The Iskenderun Port and Hatay Airport facilitate access to the area, thereby increasing the number of tourists. Thanks to its location, Hatay is easily accessible by road and rail all year round.
