About Ulan Ude

The city of Ulan Ude is the capital of the Republic of Buryatia in the Siberian region of Russia and is a stop on the Trans Siberian Railway. To the west is the Baikal Lake and Irkutsk and to the south of the city is Mongolia. According to 2010 data, the city has a population of approximately 400 thousand people. In the city's name the word Ude comes from the Ude river, while the word Ulan means red in Buryat. The city is located approximately 5600 kilometers east of Moscow and is located at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level.

Although there are structures richly made of wood and stone in the historical center of the city, examples of Russian classicism can be found along the river banks. In addition to this, the history of the peoples of the region is told in the large ethnographic museum in the city.
