Makhachkala, also referred to as Fort Maghach, is the capital of the Republic of Dagestan in Russia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city was called “Shamilkala” in memory of Sheikh Shamil. Although the city, which is home to an estimate of 500,000 people, was a prominent and cultural center in the past, it has now left its place to other important centers in the surrounding area.  

In this city, you can witness some of the rural life of Russia, you can discover the beauties of forests and green spaces in the vicinity, especially with the revival of nature in spring. It is also possible to taste some of the finest flavors of Russia, such as pork soup and pelmeni. The best time to visit Makhachkala are during the spring and summer months. Other times of the year, especially the winter months, the city has harsh weather conditions which can be trying for tourists.
