Macapa, where the equator runs through the middle of the city, is known in the country with the nickname “A Capital do Meio do Mundo” which means “the Capital of the Middle of the World”. Macapa, which is one of the richest cities in the north of Brazil, is located where the Amazon River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The city also comes to the forefront thanks to being home to the Port of Santana, where gold, timber, oil and manganese produced in the country and being high added value products are sent to the world. Macapa, where the commercial activities rather than the industry lead the economy, is the 5th largest city of the Amapa State it is located in. The population of Macapa, Brazil's 51st most populous city despite of its richness, is around 400,000.

Macapa which is on an important location in terms of Amazon tourism is also famous for its squares. The two of the most important squares in the city are the Fort Square and Barao do Rio Branco Square. Every neighborhood in the city has at least one square with churches. There is also an international airport in the city, which is at the forefront commercially. Macapa Alberto Alcolumbre International Airport is 2 kilometers away from the city and 4 kilometers away from the tourist destinations on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean.
