About Hassi Messaoud

Located in east Algeria, Hassi Messaoud is a city situated in the Ouargia Province. According to the 2008 census the city had a population of 45 thousand. Hassi Messaoud’s prominence grew significantly after oil was discovered in 1956; the city is now home to offices of all the major oil and gas companies. Within a 25-kilometer radius there are over 800 wells. The city’s name Hassi Messaoud means ‘the well of Messaoud’ in Arabic.

The city features a bus and taxi station that provides transportation to all other major cities. The Oued Irara-Krim Belkacem Airport serves Hassi Messaoud and is located 9 km southeast of the city. In addition, the city is located along the N3 national highway, between Touggourt and Biskra to the north and Illizi and Djanet to the south. The city is divided into seven localities; Centre Ville Hassi Messaoud, Haoud El Hamra, Gassi Touil, Nezla, Oued Tayeh, El Gassi, and Irara.

The city experiences a hot desert climate with long and extremely hot summers, mild winters, and very little rainfall throughout the year. The average annual temperatures between June and September range from 40 and 50 degrees and the average annual temperature in January ranges between 4 and -2 degrees.
