About Cusco

The city of Cuzco in the Andes Plateau in Peru is also the capital of the state of Cuzco. The city, which has also been the capital city of the Inca Kingdom in the past, attracts a great deal of interest by enthusiasts of history and nature-loving tourists.

In the city where the subtropical mountain climate is effective, heavy rainfalls are seen from December to March. The best time to visit the city in terms of weather conditions is June, July and August. Many festivals are held in the city during this period.

Keep in mind that if you want to take a picture of the local people in Cuzco, where you can see lamas during your visit, you may have to tip. For those who have the courage to try different flavors of the rich Peruvian cuisine, the most famous of local dishes, 'cuy', is suggested.

Machu Picchu, where the Inca ruins are located, is one of the places you should definitely see. Plaza de Armas, Qurikancha Temple, Iglesia del Triunfo, built in 1536, and Cuzco Cathedral, a restored Inca palace, are among the main attractions. If you have time, you can join in trekking tours in the Andes Mountains. Sacred Valley is another interesting destination. Here you can both observe local culture and visit the markets on a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday where local products and fresh food are sold. If you are looking for something more special, you can go to the San Blas neighborhood. Here you will find shops where boutique products are sold and nice cafés where you can take a break.

The altitude of Cuzco is about 3400 meters. Because of this, you might experience health problems like diarrhea, nausea, headache and fatigue, as most of the tourists, until you get used to the altitude. It is recommended that you carry relevant medicine with you because of this reason. You should keep in mind to wear sunscreen during the day, and to take extra clothes such as coats and cardigans with you in the evenings during your stay.
