Takoradi, which is the center of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan area in the western part of Ghana, is the region's largest industrial and commercial center. In the city, which has a population of about 445,000 people according to 2012 census data, the economy is focused on lumber, plywood, shipbuilding and railway repair. The city, which lies on a railway linking Kumasi to Accra, is also a port city.
